Kagame Declares War on the Poor: The Heartless Devastation of Kimisagara

President Paul Kagame’s government has descended on its most vulnerable citizens, flattening the entire residential area of Kimisagara without warning.
Just twenty-four hours after the regime proudly announced that Rwanda would host a multi-million dollar Formula 1 Grand Prix, the bulldozers rolled in. Residents watched their homes crumble into dust. No rescue measures were put in place. No safety nets were offered. No advanced notice was given. Today, thousands of Rwandans have absolutely nowhere to go.
The Hypocrisy of "Climate Safety"
Ironically, the government claims these homes are vulnerable to climate dangers and flooding, arguing that residents are being forcefully evicted "for their own safety."
What kind of government protects its people by leaving them homeless?
This cruel irony exposes the regime’s dual reality:
· The Global Illusion: A hyper-modern state sponsoring elite sporting events to attract the world's billionaires to the self-proclaimed "Singapore of Africa."
· The Domestic Reality: A ruthless administration that bulldozes the homes of the poor in a nation where nearly half the population still suffers from multidimensional poverty.
A History of Planning Failures
There is no debate that Kigali needs urban planning. However, the Kagame regime has failed miserably at addressing the city’s actual structural crises.
For years, the government has ignored a ticking health timebomb: the lack of a centralized sewage system. Right now, raw sewage is dumped directly into the water supply of two million city inhabitants. A proper sewage system would not only prevent a major health catastrophe but would also structurally mitigate the very flooding used to justify these demolitions.
Funding is not the issue. The European Union, the African Development Bank, and various international donors have provided millions for a centralized sewage system at different times. Yet, the regime has consistently failed to implement the project.
The Bottom Line
It is mind-boggling that Kigali has come to this point. There is simply no excuse, no justification, and no explanation for the regime’s calculated cruelty against the Rwandan poor.
