Biography
Rwandan journalist and acting editor of the independent newspaper Umuvugizi, highly critical of the Kagame government. Had reported on the attempted assassination of Gen. Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa in South Africa shortly before his own murder.
Circumstances
Shot multiple times outside his home in Kigali. Authorities later arrested suspects and advanced a revenge-for-genocide narrative; colleagues and press-freedom groups questioned the official story amid a wave of attacks on critics before the 2010 election. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for investigation into killings of opponents that season.
Alleged responsibility
Official prosecutions advanced a personal-revenge account. Press-freedom organisations and opposition voices alleged possible state-linked targeting. Case remains heavily contested in open literature.
