Rwanda National Congress Welcomes Democratic Republic of Congo to UN Security Council Presidency, Calls for Constructive Engagement and Regional Peace
PORTLAND, Maine — July 3rd, 2026 — The Rwanda National Congress (RNC) welcomes the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as it assumes the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of July. This important leadership role presents a timely opportunity to address the longstanding challenges of peace, security, and resource governance in the Great Lakes region.
The RNC recognizes the immense suffering endured by the people of eastern DRC due to decades of conflict, displacement, and the illegal exploitation of natural resources. We support genuine international efforts to promote transparency in mineral supply chains, protect civilians, and ensure that the vast wealth of the Congo benefits its own citizens rather than fueling violence and instability.
“As the DRC assumes this influential position, we urge all parties to prioritize dialogue, respect for sovereignty, and accountability,” said Ignace Rusagara, Spokesperson for the Rwanda National Congress. “Sustainable peace in the Great Lakes cannot be achieved through militarism or proxy conflicts. It requires transparent governance, an end to authoritarian practices, and economic cooperation that serves the people of both nations.”
The RNC believes that the Security Council presidency offers a platform not only for the DRC but for the entire region to move beyond cycles of accusation and counter-accusation toward practical solutions. True regional stability demands democratic reforms across borders, respect for human rights, and the empowerment of citizens rather than ruling elites.
The RNC reaffirms its commitment to a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Rwanda that can serve as a responsible neighbor and partner in the Great Lakes region. We stand ready to engage constructively with all stakeholders committed to justice, reconciliation, and shared development.
