The United States Reaffirms Strong Support for Congolese Sovereignty Amid Regional Tensions as the DRC Assumes UN Security Council Presidency

— The Rwanda National Congress (RNC) welcomes two significant developments that strengthen the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) position on the international stage.

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to the DRC’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and stability. In recent statements, the U.S. underscored that it “stands alongside the people of the DRC in the pursuit of lasting stability, sovereignty, and prosperity.”

Additionally, the DRC has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for its two-year term, providing a powerful platform to address ongoing security challenges in the Great Lakes region.

“The RNC views these developments as a critical opportunity for the international community to support genuine peace and security in the region,” said Ali Abdulkarim, the First Vice Chaiperson of Rwanda National Congress. “We urge the DRC to use its Security Council presidency to mobilize global action to end the violence in eastern DRC, halt foreign interference, and protect the sovereignty and mineral resources of the Congolese people. Millions have suffered for far too long. The cycle of conflict must end.”

The RNC calls on the international community, including the United Nations, African Union, and key bilateral partners, to increase pressure on Rwanda to cease actions destabilizing the DRC and the broader Great Lakes region.
