Rwandan Regime’s Boast Of 10% Economic Growth Rings Hollow Amid Persistent Poverty And Repression

PORTLAND, Maine — June 25 th , 2026 — As Rwandan President Paul Kagame chaired a cabinet meeting on June 30, 2026, to tout 10% GDP growth in the first quarter of 2026, the Rwanda National Congress (RNC) called on the regime to confront the stark reality facing ordinary Rwandans rather than ce lebrate statistics that fail to translate into improved livelihoods.

According to the regime’s own figures, Rwanda’s economy expanded by 10% in Q1 2026, with broad-based gains reported across services, industry (particularly manufacturing, mining, and construction), information and communication, and export -oriented agriculture. Yet these headline numbers mask a deeper failure: Rwanda remains one of the poorest countries in the world, with citizens trapped in grinding poverty despite years of similar self-congratulatory claims.

World Bank data for 2025 shows Rwanda’s GDP per capita at $1,123 — lagging behind Uganda’s $1,206, Tanzania’s $1,318, and far below regional leader, Kenya, with a GDP per capita of $2,362.

“Every year the Kagame regime parades impressive growth figures while 14 million Rwandans continue to struggle with poverty, limited opportunities, and suppressed freedoms,” said the RNC Chairman, Dr Emmanuel Hakizimana . “True leadership is not about boasting selective statistics in tightly controlled briefings — it is about delivering tangible prosperity, respecting human rights, and allowing democratic voices to flourish. The Rwandan people deserve better than perpetual propaganda that ignores their daily hardships.”

The RNC emphasized that sustainable development requires more than top -line growth. It demands inclusive governance, transparency, accountability, and an end to the suppression of dissent that has characterized the current regime. Without these foundations, economic gains risk benefiting a narrow elite while the majority of citizens see little meaningful change.
